It's used to create smart contracts that implement business logic and generate a chain of transaction records in the blockchain system.

Learn solidity if you are interested in smart contract development on Ethereum Blockchain. While there are other Blockchains as well where you can deploy your smart contract or similar applications, e.g. dApps. Learning solidity can be considered a good starting point.

Solidity is the primary language on Ethereum as well as on other private blockchains on platforms that compete with Ethereum, such as Monax and its Hyperledger Burrow blockchain, which uses Tendermint for consensus.

You might be like, why didn't I talk about Rust instead of Solidity. Note that, Rust can be used to write smart contracts (and it is used on the Solana blockchain), but reflecting Ethereum's popularity, Solidity is the better used of the two. Solidity is the Ethereum language, so anyone in DeFi needs to get on top of it.

  • Familiarity with the command line to create new directories.
